ElringKlinger Kunststofftechnik opens sustainable plant in Qingdao, China

  • Consistently applying the “local for local” principle, ElringKlinger designates the new Qingdao site as its regional hub for engineered plastics activities in Asia.
  • Targeted investment in growth markets leads to a quadrupling of capacity for the production of high-performance plastic solutions.
  • With a focus on sustainability and efficiency, the plant – designed as a low-carbon facility – sets benchmarks in energy-efficient and sustainable production.

ElringKlinger Kunststofftechnik GmbH (EKT), part of ElringKlinger AG, inaugurated its new plant at the Sino-German EcoPark in Qingdao, China. Through this state-of-the-art site, ElringKlinger is consistently applying the “local for local” principle, thereby establishing Qingdao as a regional hub for its engineered plastics activities in Asia.

The newly constructed facility will quadruple the company's production capacity for high-performance plastics. In this context, ElringKlinger's focus is on investing in high-growth industries of the future such as mobility, medical technology, semiconductor technology, renewable energies, and hydrogen applications. The emphasis is on the localization of key products, the establishment of regional supply chains, and the targeted expansion of regional development and validation expertise.

“The new site strengthens our local value creation in China and underscores the strategic importance of Asia within our global network. This enables us to be closer to the market and faster in implementation, while systematically strengthening our role as a trusted partner and global player in future-facing technologies. At the same time, we are addressing growing demand in key application areas such as automotive, medical technology, semiconductors, and renewable energy,” says Dirk Willers, Chief Sales Officer of ElringKlinger AG.

The plant brings together central functions such as production, project management, and sales – to be complemented by research and development in the future. Designed consistently with scalability in mind, the site lays the groundwork for substantial growth in the region and enables faster development, testing, and transition of customer-specific applications into series production. On-site manufacturing includes components and systems made from high-performance plastics such as seals, guide rings, tubing, profiles, high-performance heat exchangers, and complex plastic assemblies. Building on this foundation, ElringKlinger Engineered Plastics (Qingdao) Co., Ltd. is strengthening its position as a partner for and supplier of high-performance polymer solutions for alternative drive systems and emerging industries.

Benchmark for efficiency and sustainability

From the outset, the new plant was designed as a low-carbon facility. Significant reductions in energy consumption and carbon emissions are achieved through energy-efficient cooling and heating systems, photovoltaics, geothermal energy, and intelligent building management. In acknowledgement of this end-to-end sustainability concept, the site was awarded LEED Gold certification in February 2026 – one of the most recognized awards for sustainable building at an international level. This underscores ElringKlinger’s commitment to consistently combining modern production technology with responsible business practices.

“The new plant in Qingdao represents a new chapter for ElringKlinger Kunststofftechnik in China. We are strengthening our local value creation and concentrating central competencies at a single location. This enables us to act faster, more efficiently, and closer to our customers in Asia. Qingdao will become the hub of our engineered plastics activities in the region,” explains Bo Sun, General Manager of ElringKlinger Kunststofftechnik in Qingdao.

The site currently employs around 120 people. This expansion positions Qingdao as a key driver of sustainable growth, localization, and technological development within the Engineered Plastics business unit in Asia.
