Focus on Carbon Neutrality

First emission-free production site

ElringKlinger is following a clear roadmap aimed at switching the Group sites to green electricity. From 2025 onwards, all European sites will be supplied solely with green electricity. The sites in Germany made the switch back in 2021 and any additional emissions have so far been offset for Germany. At the same time, the Group is working to also reduce or even prevent gas consumption at the plants. This is something that has now been achieved by the site in Gelting, Bavaria. Installed in 2023, the second heat pump uses the ambient air as a heat source and turns it into thermal energy that can be used to heat the production facilities. This eliminates the need for gas heating and means that all the energy required by the plant is obtained from carbon-neutral sources. The project was part of the 1%-capex-budget provided by the Group for investment in emission-reducing measures.

“Provincial Green Factory” – company in Changchun, China, awarded national-level “Green Factory” status

The Chinese subsidiary Changchun ElringKlinger Ltd. has received national-level Green Factory certification. The certificate was officially awarded by the Ministry for Industry and Information Technology in Jilin province. The preparations took several months and involved planning for energy-saving sustainability projects. The plant has already brought on stream a photovoltaic system and for many years has been successfully operating a heat recovery system. Each year, these two systems play a major part in saving energy and reducing CO2 emissions. In addition to these measures, the plant also has a certified energy, environmental, and occupational safety management system. With these prerequisites in place, the plant in Changchun has every opportunity to drive further reductions in its energy consumption and emissions, thereby making a valuable contribution to climate change mitigation.
