  • Supply of cockpit cross-car beams for next generation of vehicles
  • Order represents triple-digit million euro volume over five years
  • Establishment of new production site in close proximity to customer
  • Start of production planned for 2017

Dettingen/Erms (Germany), November 30, 2016 +++ ElringKlinger AG has received an order from an US car maker for the supply of cockpit cross-car beams. The lightweight structural components made of metal and polymer will be fitted to the next generation of vehicles. The contract covers a triple-digit million euro volume over five years. Production is scheduled to commence in 2017. A new production plant in close proximity to the customer's site will be established for the purpose of fulfilling the order and supporting optimized supply chain aspects.

"The second large-scale order for our cockpit cross-car beams serves as confirmation of the decisive route chosen by ElringKlinger in the high-tech market for lightweight vehicle body and chassis components," says Dr. Stefan Wolf, Chief Executive Officer of ElringKlinger AG. He also points to the fact that they are independent from the type of drive system in use: "Our lightweighting solutions help to meet ever-stricter CO2 standards for vehicles with conventional combustion engines but are also instrumental in extending the range of hybrid and pure electric vehicles."

Cockpit cross-car beams produced by ElringKlinger can help to achieve significant weight reductions compared to conventional steel carrier designs. The production process includes an innovative method of hydroforming and plastic injection-molding combined into a single-step process. The resulting structural parts made of polymer and metal combine the benefits of both materials: design freedom, tremendous integration opportunities of complex geometries, excellent precision in terms of shape and dimensions with minimal tolerances as well as outstanding structural resistance in the event of an accident.

ElringKlinger has been working on substituting metal by plastics over a period spanning more than 15 years and has accumulated considerable know-how in this field with regard to materials and production methods. As a series supplier to a German premium car maker, the Group has already been manufacturing structural parts made of polymer-metal hybrids at its sites in Leamington (Canada) and Suzhou (China) since 2015. The latest order confirms and encourages the strategy of ElringKlinger into lightweight body and chassis components.
